The name is a bit of a mouthful and is certainly not NLP's strongest asset. By trying to be too comprehensive it has ended up being somewhat off-putting and some people feel a little uncomfortable about the 'programming' part of the name when they first encounter NLP.
However the truth of it is that NLP is a bit like an 'owners manual' for your brain! As we grew up we learned wonderful things like mathematics and english and geography but not much about how to feel good or to have great relationships. That's where NLP comes in.
Over the years, NLP has developed some very powerful tools and skills for communication and change. These include learning to look at events from a different perspective, giving ourselves positive feel-good triggers and learning how to make our relationships work and it is these that are used so successfully in life coaching. However, NLP also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about.
At another level, NLP is about self-discovery, exploring identity and mission. It provides a framework for understanding and relating to the 'spiritual' part of human experience that reaches beyond us as individuals to our family, community and global systems. NLP is not only about competence and excellence, it is also about wisdom and vision.
So you could say that NLP has become successful not because of its name but in spite of it and if something with such an inexplicable name can become this popular it must be good - because the title does it no favours at all!
